Professor Helen Askitopoulou
Helen Askitopoulou is a Professor Emeritus of Anaesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete (2011). Her previous positions have included Professor of Anaesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete (1985-2011); and Chairperson, Department of Anaesthesiology, University Hospital of Heraklion (1990-2011). She has served as a Senator of the European Academy of Anaesthesiology (1994-2004); a Member, Council of European Society of Anaesthesiology (2009-2012); and a Chair, Ethics Committee, European Society for Emergency Medicine (2012-present).
Her current research interests include the history of medicine in ancient Greece and ethical issues and dilemmas in medicine from antiquity to the present time. She organized the 7th International Congress on the History of Anaesthesia (ISHA), Heraklion, Crete (October 1-3, 2009); and she edited its proceedings, the book History of Anaesthesia VII.
